The Perjalanan SALIB, as a sacred sign, can become a devotion for the Catholics of Malaysia. The simple cross measuring nine feet tall and five feet across is made from wood which is referred to as the SALIB. The arrangement of the nine SALIBs makes the Perjalanan SALIB a symbol of unity in diversity, friendship in spite of differences; and deepening of communion with our Saviour.
The Perjalanan SALIB reminds us that the experience of suffering and despair is not exclusive but universal. Catholics must embrace the cross with dignity and love for the Crucified Christ. The arrangement of the 9 SALIBs that makes the Perjalanan SALIB, reminds us that the different areas of our lives are not isolated but are all interconnected and interdependent. Therefore, we no longer visualise a solitary SALIB but a unified SALIB.
The Perjalanan SALIB and more importantly the crucified Jesus on the cross affirms us that we are not alone - neither our families, our church, society and nature just as the Gospel affirms: "I am with you always, even to the end of the age (Matthew 28:20)" Jesus is present with his love, and by this grace, we are strengthened to overcome every obstacle in life.
The Bahasa Melayu idiom, "Berat sama dipikul, ringan sama dijinjing" eloquently describes the wisdom found in Scripture: "Two are better than one because they have a good reward for their toil. For if they fall, one will lift up the other, but woe to one who is alone and falls and does not have another to help". (Ecclesiastes 4: 9-10).
Therefore, begin everyday by taking up your SALIB and follow Christ but not alone, walking together, as we continue this journey of faith and life.
